There are vehicles that deserve to be preserved exactly as they were. And then there are vehicles that reveal something greater when given the opportunity to evolve.
Project Arrix began with a 2001 Range Rover P38 and a simple question: what could this iconic British luxury 4x4 become if its unmistakable character were preserved, while its performance, reliability, and usability were brought into a new era?
The answer is Arrix - a one-of-one Range Rover P38 restomod built around a naturally aspirated Corvette LS3 V8 producing 430 horsepower, finished in Ferrari Argento Silver, and refined from the drivetrain to the interior as a modern grand tourer.
This was never about replacing the identity of the P38.
It was about discovering what was already there.
The Foundation: A Range Rover Worth Reimagining
The P38 occupies a distinctive place in Range Rover history. It combined genuine four-wheel-drive capability with a level of refinement that helped establish the Range Rover as something more than an off-road vehicle.
Project Arrix takes that original philosophy and develops it further.
Rather than turning the P38 into something unrecognizable, Legacy Overland approached the build as a complete re-engineering exercise. The goal was to preserve the character, proportions, and driving experience that make the Range Rover P38 special while addressing the areas where modern performance and long-term usability could make the greatest difference.
That philosophy shaped every decision that followed.
From the powertrain and cooling system to the interior materials and exterior finish, Arrix was developed as one cohesive vehicle rather than a collection of individual modifications.
The Heart of Arrix: A 430-HP Corvette LS3 V8
At the center of the build is a naturally aspirated Corvette LS3 V8 producing 430 horsepower.
The decision to use the LS3 was about more than outright performance. The engine provides a proven American V8 powertrain with strong performance, serviceability, and a character that transforms the personality of the P38 without overwhelming it.
But installing an LS3 into a Range Rover P38 is not simply a matter of removing one engine and fitting another.
The conversion required a complete engineering approach — custom engine mounting, drivetrain adaptation, cooling, fuel delivery, exhaust fabrication, electrical integration, and ECU calibration. Each system had to work with the architecture of the P38 rather than simply exist alongside it.
For those considering a P38 LS3 engine swap, Arrix demonstrates what is possible when an engine conversion is treated as an integrated engineering project rather than a standalone modification.
Engineering the Powertrain: More Than an Engine Swap
The real challenge in a Range Rover P38 engine swap begins after the engine physically fits.
A successful conversion has to consider everything around it.
For Arrix, the factory Land Rover transfer case was retained and integrated with the Corvette LS3 drivetrain. Custom engine mounts and drivetrain adaptations were engineered specifically for the P38 platform, while a purpose-built cooling system and custom fuel delivery system were developed to support the new powertrain.
The exhaust system was also custom fabricated for the chassis, creating a complete path from the LS3 to the road beneath it.
Then came the electronics.
The Corvette LS3 ECU had to be integrated with the existing Land Rover electrical systems, followed by extensive diagnostics, calibration, road testing, and drivetrain refinement.
The result is not simply an LS-powered Range Rover.
It is a Range Rover P38 engineered around an LS3.
Keeping the Character: British Engineering Meets American V8
The temptation with a classic 4x4 restomod is to change everything.
Arrix takes a different approach.
The original Range Rover character remains visible throughout the vehicle. The factory transfer case was retained, the original dashboard appearance was respected, and the interior was restored using an OEM+ philosophy rather than being transformed into something completely modern.
This balance is what gives the build its identity.
The LS3 brings American V8 performance. The P38 provides the British luxury and unmistakable design. Together, they create something that neither could achieve independently.
It is a meeting of two engineering cultures but one that feels remarkably natural once the work is complete.
A Cabin Rebuilt Around Modern Luxury
The transformation continues inside.
The cabin was completely restored with Nappa Grain Ferrari Beige Tradizione leather, including matching piping across the seating surfaces. New black automotive carpeting and an OEM-style replacement headliner complete the foundation of the interior restoration.
The technology follows the same principle.
A Blaupunkt Frankfurt head unit maintains the period-correct appearance of the original dashboard while introducing wireless Bluetooth connectivity. Kicker speakers and a BOSS amplified subwoofer provide a modern audio experience without compromising the visual character of the P38 interior.
It is an approach we return to throughout our Range Rover restoration and custom build services: improve what matters, preserve what makes the vehicle special, and make every modification feel intentional.
Argento Silver: A New Expression of the P38
Outside, Arrix receives another defining element - Ferrari Argento Silver.
The understated metallic finish brings a sophisticated character to the P38's original lines without disguising them. Instead, it emphasizes the proportions and surfaces that made the second-generation Range Rover distinctive in the first place.
Genuine Land Rover Mondial alloy wheels complete the exterior, paired with BFGoodrich All-Terrain KO3 tires to give the vehicle a confident stance and the capability to venture beyond the pavement.
The result is deliberately restrained.
Nothing feels added simply for attention.
Everything contributes to the whole.
From Classic 4x4 to Grand Tourer
Project Arrix was ultimately conceived as a luxury grand touring Range Rover — a vehicle that could combine the comfort and refinement expected from a Range Rover with the responsiveness and character of a modern V8-powered drivetrain.
That distinction matters.
This isn't a competition truck built purely around performance. It isn't a museum restoration designed to remain untouched. And it isn't a modern SUV wearing an old body.
It occupies the space between all three.
A classic Range Rover P38, carefully restored and extensively re-engineered, with the capability to be driven and enjoyed as a contemporary grand tourer.
The Art of the Complete Build
What makes Arrix significant is not any single component.
It is the way the components work together.
The 430-horsepower LS3 V8, custom drivetrain integration, retained Land Rover transfer case, engineered cooling and fuel systems, custom exhaust, integrated electronics, restored interior, modern audio, Ferrari Argento Silver finish, Mondial wheels, and all-terrain tires were all developed toward the same objective: creating a P38 that feels complete.
That is the difference between modifying a vehicle and building one.
At Legacy Overland, our custom builds and restoration services are guided by the same principle — every system should serve the vehicle as a whole.
From engine swaps and drivetrain engineering to full restorations and bespoke interiors, the objective is never simply to make a vehicle different.
It is to make it better without losing what made it worth building in the first place.
Arrix: A Range Rover Reimagined
Project Arrix demonstrates what happens when the Range Rover P38 is treated not as an outdated luxury 4x4, but as a platform with untapped potential.
Its British character remains.
Its American heart changes everything.
The result is a one-of-one P38 restomod that combines classic Range Rover design, modern V8 performance, handcrafted restoration, and thoughtful engineering into a vehicle built for the road ahead.
