This project began with the rugged bones of a 1996 Toyota Land Cruiser HZJ73—one of the most capable platforms to ever roam the outback. But instead of heading down the well-worn path of a hardtop restoration, we carved a new road. Our mission: to transform this classic 70 Series into the ultimate warm-weather runabout—stripped back, strengthened, and soaked in sunshine.
The factory top came off, and in its place, we custom-fabricated a full soft top system, supported by a purpose-built roll bar structure. The design ensures both open-air enjoyment and structural rigidity, marrying safety with style. The rear doors were converted to half-door format for that safari-style openness, while a new tailgate setup completed the transformation.
The soft top was hand-made by Legacy Overland in tan colored German-style triple layer soft top fabric with a rubber insulating membrane. A rear window were added in smoked see-through plastic and fastened with snap-in buttons and strips. Roll-up sides were incorporated to let the breeze in. This high-end set up made for the best water and dust resistant hood installation in the finest materials - function and form!
Inside, the upgrades continue. A completely new sound system was installed—crisp, powerful, and ready to soundtrack summer adventures. Every component was selected to survive the elements and deliver clarity whether you’re cruising the beach or bouncing down a trail.
