Original Character, Renewed

Abenaki came to us as a 1987 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ62 still wearing the honest character earned over decades of use. The objective wasn't to reinvent Toyota's classic wagon, but to bring its presence back - addressing the body, renewing tired exterior details, and sorting the mechanical and electrical systems that needed attention.

Preservation With Purpose

The transformation began with an extensive body and paint restoration, stripping the exterior down far enough to properly address the panels before carefully rebuilding the truck around its original form. New rear-view mirrors, grille and bezels, window felts, vents, door hardware, side repeaters, parking lights and rear lamps were installed, along with a headlight conversion kit, power antenna, and new front and rear bumpers with end caps.

Mechanically, the focus remained on making Abenaki dependable without changing its identity. The ignition system was extensively renewed with an electronic ignition conversion, distributor, igniter and coil assembly, spark-plug wires and tune-up components. Suspension, transmission and transfer-case systems were inspected, while later testing identified brake and transmission-cooling-line items requiring attention before final verification.

The finishing touch changed the stance without overpowering the FJ62's familiar shape. Abenaki now sits on 16x8 Nomad Field 504 wheels in Satin Black with chrome hub caps, wrapped in BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO3 LT245/70R16 tires. After final detailing, fluid checks, safety inspection and road testing, Abenaki emerged as the same straightforward Land Cruiser at heart—only sharper, better sorted, and ready for another chapter.
