Built to Keep Going

Some Land Cruisers need reinvention. Others simply need the years taken back out of them. Project Summit belongs to the latter. This 1987 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ60 arrived with the honest, mechanical character that makes the 60 Series so enduring, but age had begun to show across the systems responsible for keeping it dependable. Rather than change what Summit was, the goal became to systematically renew what mattered and preserve the truck that was already there.

Reliability Restored

The work began with the fundamentals. The fuel and carburetor systems were diagnosed and corrected after a no-start condition, followed by extensive attention to the electrical system including repaired wiring, upgraded power distribution, new grounds, mega fuses, relays, battery connections, lighting circuits, washer system, and supporting hardware. The workshop then moved deeper into the drivetrain, addressing engine mounts, crankshaft and oil-pan sealing, the clutch, transmission and transfer case before returning Summit to the road.

Chassis work transformed how the FJ60 carries itself. A comprehensive suspension package brought new leaf springs, shocks, shackles and pins, while sway-bar components, steering tie-rod ends, wheel bearings, front spindles and the 4x4 front knuckles were renewed and serviced. The braking system received equally thorough attention with a new master cylinder, front rotors and pads, rear drums, shoes and wheel cylinders, along with brake-line work. The front axle and knuckle assemblies were stripped, cleaned, rebuilt, greased and carefully calibrated before final alignment and road testing.

Summit was never meant to emerge as something unfamiliar. The extensive photo archive shows a build focused on retaining the FJ60's unmistakable identity rather than replacing it: its square-bodied profile, utilitarian cabin and period Land Cruiser character remain at the center of the finished truck. Exterior details were corrected where required, including rear light lenses and dedicated dent and paint correction, before the vehicle was cleaned, aligned and prepared for its final photography. The last stage was exactly what a build like Summit demanded inspection, brake adjustment and repeated road testing until the truck was ready to return to service.
