Keeping a Classic Moving
Rocco arrived as a 1985 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ45 with its character already established. The objective wasn't to change the truck, but to improve the way it could be lived with adding modern climate control, sorting its electrical systems, and addressing the mechanical issues standing between this classic Land Cruiser and dependable use.
Mechanical Confidence, Restored
What began with routine servicing soon went deeper. The ignition system was renewed, the carburetor removed and reworked with a modified linkage and airbox, and the engine was carefully tuned through timing, mixture and idle adjustments. The transfer case was removed and resealed, while a clutch-cylinder issue was corrected before attention turned to the cylinder head, which was removed, machined and reinstalled with a new overhaul gasket set.
Further testing revealed excessive exhaust smoke, leading back into the top end of the engine. The valve train was opened again, the valve seals addressed, and the intake and supporting components reassembled before repeated test drives confirmed the engine was running cleanly without smoke or overheating. A new exhaust muffler and repaired exhaust completed the mechanical work.
Usability was just as important. Rocco received a hot/cold under-dash air-conditioning system built around a new evaporator, compressor, hoses and fittings, while electrical faults including the hazard, brake-light, fuse-box and oil-pressure-switch circuits—were traced and repaired. The result remains unmistakably Rocco: an honest FJ45 whose original personality was left alone, but whose mechanical foundation and everyday usability were given the attention needed for the road ahead.
