Built To Run Right
Project Ember is a long-wheelbase 1981 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ43 recommissioned with a focused goal: correct critical mechanical failures and return the truck to reliable, usable condition. Rather than pursuing cosmetic restoration, this phase centered on resolving serious engine issues that affected longevity and drivability.
Root Cause Addressed
The FJ43 presented with a blown head gasket, valvetrain faults, and inadequate top-end oiling. The engine was carefully disassembled and inspected to identify the root causes. The cylinder head was removed and professionally machined, followed by proper head gasket replacement and controlled reassembly. The valvetrain was serviced in detail, with pushrods, rocker assemblies, and valve clearances corrected to restore proper operation. A key component of the work involved diagnosing and correcting oil pressure and lubrication faults. The oil pump was replaced, oil passages cleaned, and oil delivery to the valvetrain verified—addressing the underlying cause of the tappet and wear issues rather than masking symptoms.
Final assembly included refitting the intake, exhaust, ignition, and carburetion systems, correcting fuel line leaks, and dialing in the carburetor. The truck was then road-tested and validated to confirm stable oil pressure, correct fueling, and dependable operation.
Project Ember is a mechanically honest recommissioning—focused on durability, correctness, and long-term use—restoring the FJ43’s legendary straight-six to the condition it was always meant to deliver.
