Project Beast – A Classic Reborn with Modern Muscle
Project Beast began its journey in Indiana and arrived at our shop as a 1974 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 with potential — and a client vision focused on reliability, drivability, and all-around performance. The exterior retained its rugged attitude, but under the skin, this FJ40 was destined for transformation.
We began with a full disassembly of the engine bay and installed a GM Performance 355ci small block V8 paired to an AX-15 5-speed transmission. Supporting upgrades included Holley Sniper EFI, custom-fabricated stainless steel exhaust, and an aluminum radiator with electric fan. A new clutch system, billet accessory pulleys, and a modern ignition system rounded out the drivetrain. We also rebuilt the transfer case, fabricated custom front and rear driveshafts, and resealed every component along the way.

Frame, Fabric, and Function Refined
The original hardtop gave way to a full soft top conversion, including custom bracket fabrication and new canvas frame installation. We installed new doors with waist seals, glass, and mechanisms, and refinished them in body-matching paint. Front disc brakes, new booster, and master cylinder brought the stopping power up to spec, while Sumitomo 15” tires gave it bite on any surface.
Inside, shift boots were upholstered, door cards replaced, and the wiring harness was cleaned up and rerun. Engine tuning, final testing, and drivetrain inspections wrapped the build — leaving Project Beast ready to roar.
